DietBet Review – Is DietBet Legit & Can You Really Make Money?
Exercise is something that oftentimes comes in and out of our lives.
Sometimes, the motivation to get up and moving just isn't there.
Plus, people live busy lives between work, school, and daily responsibilities. Sometimes, there doesn’t seem to be much time left in the day to care for our own bodies.
However, we all know it's important to stay healthy. Unfortunately, according to researchers at Harvard, it's not always easy to keep off excess weight.
Thankfully, a new wave of apps that pay you for working out are helping people who are looking to lose weight by creating a community of believers who motivate each other.
One of these apps is DietBet, an app that lets you bet on yourself to get in shape and make money for losing weight.
In this DietBet review, we’re going to discuss the benefits to using the app and how you could possibly make some extra cash on your fitness journey.
If that sounds good to you, then let’s get into the basics!
What is DietBet?
DietBet is a free app from the WayBetter family of apps that lets you bet on yourself in order to reach a weight loss goal.
WayBetter is well known for other fitness apps like StepBet and RunBetter, although DietBet is certainly one of their most popular apps.
On DietBet, you join a pool of players to take on a weight loss challenge and bet a certain amount of money into the pool.
Contestants who make it to the end will split the pot of money and successfully lose their desired weight!
This is the exact same model as StepBet, and the concept is also similar to HealthyWage, another app that lets you bet on yourself to get in shape.
However, on DietBet, weight loss targets are a specific percentage, which is clearly indicated before you buy-in to a game with other players.
For example, you can join a pool to lose 4% of your current body weight within a certain period of time.
You also have to weigh yourself before you start and at the end of the challenge in order to show proof of the actual weight loss, but we'll cover all that late on in our DietBet review.
In terms of popularity, DietBet currently has over 850,000 players, nearly 16 million pounds lost, and has given out over $62 million dollars!
The app is no joke as many people have preached the benefit of other peoples’ motivation and the betting that has helped them reach their ultimate goal.
DietBet also guarantees your win as long as you lose the weight in time, so this is a viable side hustle you can try if you want to get in shape and make a bit of extra cash.
How Does DietBet Work?
If you want to make money with DietBet, the process takes 5 steps:
- Join a game.
- Verify your starting weight.
- Play (and lose the weight).
- Verify your ending weight.
- Win cash.
There are 2 different styles of games on DietBet that are also worth mentioning:
- Kickstarter – Lose 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks.
- Transformer – Lose 10% of your body weight in 6 months.
There's also a flexible kickstarter version that gives 4 to 6 weeks to reach your goal, but these are the main games you can play.
As for buy-ins, bet’s range from $10 all the way up to $500 with most of them being around $35.
To help explain how DietBet works, let's dive into each step in detail…
1. Join a Game
You have a few options in terms of what type of game you want to join.
For Kickstarter games, you can choose between the already existing games that are about to start or start your own and challenge your friends and family.
For Transformer games, there are new games that start several times a month without the option to create your own game.
You can pay your bet monthly or pay upfront to get the 6th month for free. There will also be smaller goals and tips in between the entire journey to help you stay on track.
Whoever completes the challenge in time will split the pot of money amongst themselves. Whoever doesn’t will sacrifice their bet and lose the prize.
2. Verify Starting Weight
You have to submit your starting weight (with proof) at least 2 days before the challenge begins.
The way you show proof is by submitting 2 photos…
- A picture of you standing on a scale in light weight clothing.
- A picture of the number on the scale next to a piece of paper with a special keyword.
The keyword will be given to you in order to make sure that you have taken the picture at the right time and with confidentiality that you aren’t cheating.
This is a pretty standard weight verification process that other fitness apps use, so don't be alarmed!
Besides, DietBet has to make an effort to prevent cheaters so players don't have an unfair advantage over others.
Note that DietBet states “for any game where the bets are over $100, we require video weigh-ins for all players.”
If your account is flagged for being suspicious, a DietBet referee might also ask that you submit a video weigh-in.
3. Play – Lose the Weight
Now’s the time to actually lose the weight and compete in the challenge!
For Kickstarter players, you’ll have 28 days to lose 4% of your starting body weight.
Transformer players will have exactly 6 months to lose 10% of your starting body weight.
You can upload progress photos, add comments, and get weight loss tips throughout both types of games.
Transformer games will also have micro goals that you should aim to hit in order to pace yourself properly and stay on track.
How you go about getting in shape is, of course, up to you.
DietBet is designed to be a motivation tool, but you still need to read up on nutrition and regularly exercise if you want to find success.
4. Verify Ending Weight
After the challenge is complete, you will have exactly 48 hours to submit your final weight.
Note that only the winners have to show proof through pictures.
It is recommended that you submit your weight even if you know you haven’t reached the required goal weight.
It's also worth noting that you have to wait for a challenge to end to claim your prize, so if you reach your goal earlier, you have to maintain it to still win!
5. Win & Split The Pot
If you win a DietBet game, you split the pot of money (from everyone’s bets) with all the other winners. The winners are finalized after 24 hours of the weigh out.
DietBet states their “fee is 10-25% of the pot, depending on the amount of the initial bet.”
This comes directly from the cash pot in order to cover their expenses. That’s essentially how DietBet makes money from all of this.
However, you should note that winners have a “No Lose Guarantee”.
This means that if you win, you can’t lose money. Worst case scenario is that you get your bet amount back and nothing in profit.
However, this is very unlikely since every player would have to be successful in order for this to happen, and records show that most games come out with some sort of extra profit to be split amongst the winners.
You can use the winnings to bet back into a new game or cashout through PayPal.
What’s the DietBet Membership Program?
DietBet is completely free to use outside of the bet you have to make in order to enter games.
However, you can also upgrade to a DietBet Membership if you want some extra perks.
A DietBet membership comes with benefits like:
- Weekly progress weigh ins.
- Potential to win progress prizes.
- Weekly goal-setting journal.
- Personalized referee for feedback.
All of these benefits are pretty much just there to help you stay motivated throughout your weight loss journey.
Pricing for the DietBet Membership Program varies based on the plan you are going for, the games you decide to play, and the length of your preferred membership. I’ve seen numbers around the $5 range for the most part.
Progress prizes are randomly given out to members who have been sending in weekly progress weigh-ins in order to hold themselves accountable for their weight loss.
Earning Potential
So how much money can you make with DietBet?
Well, that all depends on the types of games you’re playing, how much you bet, and how many people drop out of the game.
Because DietBet takes out a nice chunk of the prize pot (usually around 20-25%), it can be hard to make any real profit.
However, most games do show an average drop out of around 25% of the players. Meaning, there actually is a chance to make a little extra money here.
According to some reviews on Reddit, most people seem to make around $5-$25 a game in profit.
Not bad considering the fact that you’re also losing a minimum of 4% of your body weight and you get a little prize at the end of all of it.
You can find instances where people earn a bit more, but this is usually for Transformer games.
Plus, threads like this show the power of keeping at it, just checkout these earnings!
It's also worth noting that you can join multiple games at once if you want to maximize your motivation and earning potential.
According to DietBet, “you can play in up to 3 Kickstarters and 3 Transformer weight loss challenges at a time.”
So, if you join a few games, you can probably recoup $50 or more, provided you win all the games.
In my honest opinion, I don’t think you should make money the number 1 priority in this situation.
After all, it’s a fitness app that’s trying to help you lose weight with money as a small motivator.
It’s definitely a plus, but it shouldn’t be your sole reason for downloading the app and giving it a try.
DietBet is all about increasing your motivation to get healthy through monetary incentives, with long-term health being the ultimate prize.
DietBet vs HealthyWage
As mentioned, HealthyWage is another weight loss app where you can make money for getting in shape.
Overall, HealthyWage is farily similar to DietBet.
After all, both platforms require betting, weigh-in verification, and goal completion to get a payout.
However the biggest difference between the 2 apps is the amount of weight you want to lose and the time frame to complete it.
HealthyWage is a great alternative for you if you’d like to bet over $100 and lose at least 10% of your body weight. Think of it as a high risk, high reward app compared to DietBet.
The prizes are much bigger, but the goals are much more challenging to reach.
In fact, HealthyWage even has team challenges where teams can earn up to $10,000 for losing the most weight…pretty crazy!
In contrast, you should stick with DietBet if you’d prefer a slower, but easier form of weight loss without losing a big bet if you don’t make it.
HealthyWage does have a calculator to help you determine how much money you can make with them and decide your ultimate goals for losing weight.
If you're curious, checkout HealthyWage's calculator to see how much you can earn!

Frequently Asked Questions
If you're still wondering if DietBet is legit or worth using, here are some of the most commonly asked questions that might provide more of an answer!
1. How Does DietBet Prevent Unhealthy Competition?
For starters, you can't join a DietBet game if your BMI is below 18.5 or will fall below 18.5 to reach your goal.
Additionally, each game type has a maximum weight loss amount.
For Kickstarters, the limit is 12% or more of your initial weight.
As for Transformers, the weight loss limits are broken into the 6 distinct phases (since it's a 6 month competiton):
- Round 1: 12% of your initial weight or more.
- Round 2: 18% of your initial weight or more.
- Round 3: 24% of your initial weight or more.
- Round 4: 27% of your initial weight or more.
- Round 5: 30% of your initial weight or more.
- Round 6: 30% of your initial weight or more.
Again, the goal here is to be healthy and motivated, so DietBet takes this very seriously.
2. What Countries Are Eligible?
You can play DietBet from anywhere in the world according to their FAQ section.
However, your reward is always paid out in $USD so keep this in mind.
3. Are There Other Apps Like DietBet?
If you like the idea of using DietBet to lose weight, you can also consider the following DietBet alternatives:
- HealthyWage, as mentioned.
- Achievement.
- Charity Miles, which is perfect if you want to do some good!
- CashWalk.
- Sweatcoin, a nifty passive income app of sorts.
- Fit Potato
- WeWard app
None of these apps have serious earning potential, with the exception of HealthyWage.
However, there's truly a fitness app for every preference, so don't be afraid to explore!
4. Can I Get Refunds?
For Kickstarter games, you can get a full refund 7 days from the start of a game.
As for Transformer games, if you pay upfront, you have 14 days to get a refund.
However, DietBet states “for all game types, exceptions may be made if a player needs to drop out for medical reasons after the refund window has ended.”
Pros and Cons Of DietBet
This wouldn’t be a legit DietBet review without discussing the pros and cons of using DietBet…
Pros
Aside from being low-risk, here are some of the benefits to trying DietBet:
- Great motivator for losing weight.
- Potential to earn profit.
- Large community of like-minded players.
- Extra weight loss tips included.
- Easy to setup and get started.
- Fun way to get in shape.
- “No Lose Guarantee.”
Cons
Despite the ease of use and great community, there are some downsides to DietBet worth noting:
- Low profit.
- DietBet takes a large fee.
- Only 2 options to lose weight.
- You lose your entire bet if you don't reach your goal.
While there are definitely a few cons to using DietBet, I think it’s fair to say that the pros heavily outweigh the cons in this case.
Is DietBet Legit?
In short… Yes, DietBet is legit. There’s no fishy business with this fitness app.
In fact, DietBet has been featured in national news outlets like ABC News, The New York Times, US Weekly, and WSJ.
However, this app isn’t going to make you rich though.
You may earn a few extra dollars per challenge, but is that really the point?
I think the main point is to promote a healthier and more active lifestyle. To help people watch what they eat and take care of their weight.
If you’re thinking of getting this app for the purpose of making money, maybe you should find another side hustle idea or turn to gig economy apps.
If you want to lose weight in a fun way while also having the potential to earn some cash and more importantly, trying hard not to lose your bet, then this app is definitely worth a try!
Finding the motivation to exercise is tough, but this could be the way in for most people who need a little kick from others.
Good luck on your fitness journey! I hope our DietBet app review helps you decide if this platform is worth it or not!
